Meditation on Materialism

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: as a man soweth, that shall he also reap. — Galatians 6:7

For several centuries we have been sowing the mental seeds of a misperception of the Universe known as materialism, “a theory that physical matter is the only or fundamental reality and that all being, processes and phenomena can be explained as manifestations or results of matter.” This limited view of reality has led to many of the local and global challenges the people of the planet are facing today.

The world economic system, as represented by the FRS, IMF, NAFTA and WTO, can no longer support peace because it depends too heavily on military profits for its own support, and it operates under free-market capitalism, using usury money to regulate the flow of trade rather than the free cash-flow money, called for in the Constitution of the United States, Article I, Section 8, Paragraph 5: “Congress shall have the power to coin money and regulate the value thereof.” The challenges are so intricately interrelated that that it can be a challenge just to consider them, much less do anything about them.

As materialism has gradually gained the upper hand in public discourse with spirituality, the control of the economic system has devolved into fewer and fewer hands. Beyond that, people from many religious traditions have experienced the rejection of their spiritual insight because they have not yet been able to satisfy materialist science’s requirement that any insight or phenomenon that is real must have a material manifestation that can be measured on a scientific instrument. This has been changing in the past few decades as Eastern metaphysics and Western physics have begun a dialogue and their practitioners can see the similarities in their knowledge. As Einstein said, “Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

Science’s presumption of superiority over the religious-spiritual-metaphysical perspective has created a myopic mindset that distorts reality. In 1847 Bishop Samuel Wilberforce of the Church of England commented that pride led to premature theorizing and the inability to approach female Nature like a gentleman. The speculator “grows to deal boldly with nature instead of reverently following her guidance. He seals his heart against her secret influence. He has a theory to maintain, a solution which must not be disproved . . . and once possessed of this false cipher, he reads amiss all the golden letters around him.” Having sown the mental seeds of arrogant ignorance in choosing to misread Creation Universe’s natural law, the members of our world society are now reaping the effects.

Euclid’s fifth postulate (in modern paraphrase) says there is at most one line parallel to a given line through a given point not belonging to that line. That statement is true when speaking about lines in a plane; it’s not true when speaking about lines on a sphere. This example indicates that the truth of a statement depends on what other statements are assumed to be true.

If people assume that only that which can be verified by materialist science is real and that anything of a spiritual, non-material nature cannot be real, those people have set themselves up to be unable to receive the blessings of transformation being brought forth by Creation Universe’s Spirit as prophesied in Joel 2:28-29 and Acts 2:17-18:

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.”

Even the literalist fundamentalist of many religious traditions have fallen prey to this mindset, believing that the Scripture of their tradition is the ultimate revelation of Creation Universe’s vision for Its people. Creation Universe is the intelligence which creates and permeates all space.

God is a much-misunderstood word. J. B. Phillips wrote Your God Is Too Small in the 1950’s, showing how some people’s limited conceptions of God leave those people unable to experience being in harmony with Creation Universe (God).

Jesus was referring to this experience of oneness with Creation when he said, “Behold, the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21).” Does society encourage its members to look within and get in touch with Creation Universe?

Let us consider Jeremiah 31:31-34:

31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

The literal translation of both the Hebrew and Greek words for sin refer to missing the mark and not sharing in the reward, which is communion with Creation Universe. Leonard Cohen’s song Sisters of Mercy speaks of repentance (changing of the heart and mind) and sin in this way:

Well, I’ve been where you’re hanging and now I can see how you’re pinned.
When you’re not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you’ve sinned.

G. K. Chesterton wrote, “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.” On a spiritual level there is a deep resonance between true Christianity and true Communism. I use the word “true” because there are many people espousing either Christianity or Communism whose understanding of these visions is superficial and not grounded in the natural law of Creation Universe (Spirit God).

Acts 4: 32-35 says:

32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,

35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

Doesn’t that sound similar to Marx’s statement, “From each according to ability, to each according to need”?

If each of us had access to all the equipment, tools and materials to express our creativity through our labor, would we need to possess those things? We would if we are susceptible to the materialist arguments, direct or subtle, designed to convince us that having the latest material goodie will give us a sense of contentment and fulfillment. Piling up materiality will not satisfy the enormous spiritual hunger that people, religious or otherwise, are feeling.

To maximize profits the World Economic System strives to motivate maximal consumption, and one of its most potent tools for maximization is advertising. Television has basically become the means through which people are exhorted to consider luxuries as necessities. We need to consider Gandhi’s comment, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.”

On the ashes of this old BS (Buying & Selling) economy controlled by usury money, whose self-destructive ways are being revealed in the daily news, the new economy of giving and receiving shall be built.* Albert Einstein commented, “Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them.” The creative cooperative people on the planet, whom everyone has the potential to be, can use the Internet to collaborate in the creation of this new economy based on spiritual rather than material values. Bucky Fuller commented, “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.” That new model must give people the opportunity to express their creative abilities in harmony with the natural laws of Creation Universe to provide all the people’s needs.

Let the words of Einstein and Fuller ground and inspire us as we individually and collectively raise our levels of awareness and begin to imagine a new world of absolute freedom, security and abundance for everyone.

Our vision of this model can be viewed on this Website.

Creating a spiritual economy will require all the people to tune in more fully to the natural law of Creation Universe. Eckhart Tolle has written two books that greatly facilitate the development of spiritual awareness, The Power of Now and Stillness Speaks. Through daily reading of these books I have found a way to contact the Source of Peace (Creation Universe) within. I have also found that peace within enables me to understand and envision the New World of Absolute Freedom, Security and Abundance presented in the New Covenant/World Bill of Rights and The Everlasting Gospel, channeled thru Allen Michael. As within, so without. I encourage all of our readers to read these three books regularly, listen to the voice of stillness within and begin to build the inspirations that you hear.
